CLIENT & BUSINESS GOALS

The founder of Huey.io sought out Mountain Dev to help resolve the issues and friction he experienced growing and selling a successful Shopify business. He wanted to help future entrepreneurs avoid those unnecessary hurdles.

His business had gone through multiple mergers and acquisitions, with personnel changing each time. This caused a lot of institutional knowledge to fall through the cracks and made it difficult for employees to know where to go with urgent tasks.
He envisioned a simple, visual representation of the org chart, backed by information about each employee, with seamless integration into existing tools. Creating such a tool and providing it to his organization would have empowered his employees to take full advantage of the company’s human element. Mountain Dev was excited to help him build out his vision.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Huey is a responsive web application and slack app that automatically constructs a graphical org chart and seamlessly integrates with existing HR software. It also provides a detail view for each employee, a search feature that includes any business detail of an employee, and a filterable directory view for viewing lists of employees. It has many avenues for populating the organization including integrations with Slack, Paycom, and Paylocity. It uses a freemium pricing model with dynamically enabled content based on the company’s payment plan.

Slack API Integration

A Slack Integration was a top priority to meet Huey users’ employees where they are and seamlessly integrate into their workflows.

  • The Slack integration allows Huey to quickly populate the organization, by pulling in each employee and any information listed in their slack profile

  • Slack commands include /who does {skill} which allows the lookup of employees with a specific skill or area of focus, /whois {name} to see details of a particular employee, and /orgchart which provides a quick visualization of the company's org chart along with the ability to dig in or traverse directly from Slack

  • Slack sign-in integration allows users to utilize their existing Slack credentials to access Huey and already associate with their organization, at a permissions level appropriate for their role.

Conclusion

MountainDev worked closely with the client and beta users to deeply understand user needs. This led to a simplified user interface and improved usability. Another benefit of this relationship was the Slack application, with reduces friction by allowing the application to meet users where they are at.

The team delivered Huey.io v1 on time and within budget constraints, and the client gave full marks in the post-project survey and continues to work with the team for ongoing maintenance and feature additions.
